Tuna Canyon: the answer to June gloom

Sunday was the first time Natalia & I ventured to the main entrance of this incredible Malibu park (I usually access the park from here).  It was overcast in Santa Monica, but after heading inland a bit and parking here…we were literally above the clouds.

Tuna Canyon is the west side’s answer to June gloom.

Logistics: Hike up to 3 miles of trails.  360 degree views of the mountains and coast line. Free street parking. From PCH take Topanga Canyon Rd to Fernwood Pacific Drive. FPC turns into Tuna Canyon Rd.  MAP IT.  Dogs on leash (but not a lot of foot traffic so I let Billy off leash here #rebel). Easy. Perfect for families & picnics.

**For a more rigorous hike, use the Big Rock Drive Entrance.  Video

SECRET DOG BEACH - MALIBU

If my day job could be taking Billy to the beach, I’d be the happiest (and luckiest) girl in the world.  I’ve always been disappointed by the west side’s negative attitude towards bringing four-legged friends to frolic in the sand. So when I heard about an alleged secret dog beach in Mailibu I just about lost my mind.

This particular spot is pretty, but far from the nicest Malibu beach.  It’s small and can get a bit smelly after the high tide leaves foul, bug infested ocean deposits on the sand (of course billy had to roll on them).

Pretty happy about that roll…

So, it’s not necessarily somewhere you’d want to throw up a umbrella and park for the day, but a walk down the coast couldn’t be more enjoyable.  There was a flurry of smiling people, chatting and walking their even happier unleashed pups up and down the beach.  Bill chased a new friend around.

Officially, I’m not sure dogs are “allowed” here, so keep your head on a swivel.  Otherwise, get some sun and enjoy your bestie’s happy face.

Directions: Take PCH north past Cross Creek Shopping Center.  Make the first left at the light and a right at the stop sign.  Drive north a few miles and keep you’re eye out for an open gated door and steps leading down to the beach.  MAP IT
